When I was growing up in Australia, Anzac Day (April 25) was the day to commemorate those who had served their nation in war, especially those who had given everything. Here, it’s today, Memorial Day.
In that spirit, I’ll let the Ode to the Fallen, as I remember it recited every Anzac Day for many years and at sunset in Returned Services League clubs around the nation, speak for me.
They shall not grow old,
As we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn.
But at the going down of the sun,
And in the morning,
We will remember them.
We will remember.
